Square-Enix has other Final Fantasy games it wants to tell you about

Earlier in the week I went off on something of a rant about Square-Enix’s announcement to release Final Fantasy XIII-2, a title which still takes me a good minute to write out and also leaves something of a bad taste in my mouth.

But that’s not why I’m writing now! If you’ve been keeping up to date with the utterly crazy business plan Square-Enix threw down a while ago with regards to the concurrent Final Fantasy games, they announced a long while back the production of a game called Final Fantasy Versus XIII. A couple of videos were released soon afterwards, showing a few in-game cinematics, then it kind of went dark for a while.

But no more! They’ve just released a rather lengthy video, albeit in Japanese, showing both cinematic and in-game footage. Shown below.

Whoever over at Square is getting paid to title Final Fantasy games needs a severe talking to, by the way.

And it actually looks…pretty badass. Now I know that I’m basically playing the role of the abused housewife here, who’s likely going to “fall down the stairs” again with Versus XIII, but I’m cautiously optimistic. The setting seems contemporary, dark, and adult, and it’s being made by the guys who created the Kingdom Hearts series, a group of games I’ve never played but have a lot of respect for. The combat system seems intriguing too; it looks familiar to the Tales rpg series’ syle of combat, which is something I could really get behind. Not to mention it all looks fucking beautiful.

Oh, and they’re also releasing a Final Fantasy game for the PSP, titled Final Fantasy Type-0 (formerly titled Final Fantasy XIII Agito, which was another terrible name), with a video you can see below, but seeing as how I neither own a PSP nor feel any desire to change that situation, I may let this one slide. Plus it kind of looks like more of the same from Square-Enix, so I’m rather non-plussed on the whole situation.

Now I can’t quite tell what the story’s about, but I’m going to guess it’s a tale about a ragtag group of rebellious teens who learn to put aside their differences to save the world. Call me crazy
