Mortal Kombat: A History of Secrets, Glitches, and Outright Crazy Rumours

The latest iteration of the Mortal Kombat series seems to have struck a chord with the gaming public, as critics and the gaming public agree that the image of a man with his name tattooed across his chest punching the head off of a scantily-clad woman is just what they’re into. (To see exactly what I just described in all it’s brutal glory please click here!)

Though I suppose this was to be expected, as the fighting game revival (started back in 2008 with the release of Street Fighter 4) is now going full steam ahead. With the success of the aforementioned Street Fighter series, Marvel Vs Capcom, and now Mortal Kombat, not to mention the ever-growing interest in Street Fight X Tekken, it’s become pretty clear that the world of gamers really, really enjoys punching people.

Tekken and Street Fighter, Living Together, Mass Hysteria!

…It’s a Ghost Busters quote. Oh come on, you must’ve gotten that one!

…Anyways, though this isn’t exactly news of the earth-shattering variety (to be honest I’m mostly doing this for the Ghost Busters reference), new videos of the next major fighting franchise cross-over, Streetfighter X Tekken, were released by Capcom and Namco earlier this week, in “dueling videos” style.

For the unaware, Streetfighter X Tekken is going to be two different fighting games, one made by Namco, the other Capcom, with each made in their own trademark style.

The idea of cross-franchise games has always seemed really cool to me, although this trend isn’t necessarily new in the fighting genre, as Capcom’s been making VS  games with other franchises, like Capcom VS SNK and the well known seizure inducement that is the Marvel VS Capcom series (click here to see what I mean), but this is likely the first time (in North America, at least) that two arguably well-known fighting franchises will go head to head. Granted Tekken’s stock may have plummeted a bit in North America in the last few years, but they’re still up there with Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat in terms of name recognition.

You’ve got two flavours of video, your Tekken:

…And your Street Fighter:

With the super-informative release date of “2012” all that’s been discussed, it’ll be a while yet before people’ll get their hands on some Ryu vs King action, though I’m sure the game will be previewed at all the big trade shows and exhibitions that are coming up soon.
